Womens Health Matters (Rainbow Hearts Group)

Women from all over the world with a variety of languages and cultures attend Rainbow Hearts – a friendly, social group for women seeking asylum and their young children. We meet every 2 weeks in Leeds during term time where we share food, make friends, talk, laugh and support each other. We like to do craft activities, Zumba, wellbeing activities, clothing donations and have guest speakers in from other organisations to share knowledge, information and skills with us.

We are part of Arts Together because when women we work with attend events held by Opera North and then tell us about them, their faces light up and they become really animated and enthusiastic.  The joy that they get from attending performances goes beyond the time of the performance, it’s something they take away with them, helping to build positive memories during a time in their lives that’s often very difficult.

I have worked within the Rainbow Hearts groups since it started in 2009. Now I lead on the project and love spending time with the wonderful women who attend the group. I’m passionate about music and the arts. I even like to pretend to be a bit of a rock star occasionally.

I have two roles within Womens Health Matters – I help run Rainbow Hearts alongside Sally and I also work as a Wellbeing Case Worker, offering additional 1-1 support to women around their mental health and wellbeing. Both these roles are with women who are seeking asylum in Leeds.
