People in Action

People in Action is a charity that tries to improve the lives of people with a learning disability or autism in Leeds. We run different groups and courses for people to get together, spend time with friends and learn skills like cooking and using public transport. We also offer one-to-one support to help people to be as independent as they can be.

Some of our groups and projects are specifically arts themed, like our Design it Yourself art group where people can improve their artistic talents in a supportive environment. We also run a project called ‘PiA Presents…’ which focuses on performing arts within the learning disabled and autistic communities. We run an annual talent competition and several ticketed showcase events throughout the year, which are open to the public.

“PiA Presents has vastly increased my confidence. I was nervous about performing but PiA encouraged me to go out and do it. Performing helped me look further into the arts, and led me to performing at the drag show we put on. I was struggling with friendships before, but I’ve made so many new friends. It’s been a blessing”. – Eli Smith

We are part of Arts Together because everyone has the right to enjoy, participate and be part of the artistic community, regardless of their background, ability, social skills or financial situation.

People you may meet

  • Sherieda Joseph

I’m the Changing Lives Project Manager, which means I manage social groups for our members. Fun fact: My first theatrical performance was playing Mary in the school nativity aged 5. I wasn't given a singing part so sung everyone else's loudly, and badly! The following year I was a donkey.

  • Bob McDougall

I’m the communications officer which means it’s my job to let everyone know about all of People in Action’s activities and events. Fun Fact: I have a music degree and perform regularly singing in a Ska band.
