Northern Opera Group

Northern Opera Group enable everyone to take part in opera – for free! We welcome people of all ages, experiences and abilities to take part, and perform alongside professional soloists and musicians.

We’ve lots of ways to get involved if appearing on stage isn’t your thing – including attending a performance, or volunteering backstage.

We stage performances and concerts throughout the year, including our annual Leeds Opera Festival which visits neighbourhoods across the city.

Around 50% of our productions involve the community as performers. We accept people of all ages and abilities, and it’s free to take part. There are no auditions required to join our community chorus, and we provide some solo roles for talented and enthusiastic amateurs.

We’re very happy to hear from people who might be interested in volunteering with Northern Opera Group – backstage, front of house, or in any other capacity.

“Just to say a huge thank you for the opportunity to be part of the show. My mum and I enjoyed it so much! You were so welcoming and made it so much fun especially as we were newbies and didn’t really know what to expect.”

We are part of Arts Together because we love Leeds and think that people in the city should have loads of opportunities to take part in all sorts of arts and culture.

People you may meet

  • David Ward

My name is David and I am the Artistic Director. This means I have the great job of getting to choose which operas we perform! You’ll often find me directing our community operas, and sometimes playing the piano.

  • Louise Garner

I’m Louise and I’m our General Manager, which involves lots of organising and spreadsheets. I’ve been singing since I was little and joining an amateur opera company at University was how I first got involved in opera!
