Pass the Spoon serves up a hilarious and wonderfully bizarre ‘sort-of opera about cookery’ at the Howard Assembly Room, where a daytime cooking show spirals into delightful operatic chaos. Hosts June Spoon and Phillip Fork attempt to prepare a meal for the impossibly demanding Mr Granules, accompanied by a manic-depressive egg and a highly-strung banana in an operatic performance that defies all culinary and theatrical expectations.
Created by the inventive team of composer David Fennessy, artist David Shrigley, and director Nicholas Bone, this opera blends music, puppetry, and comedy into a uniquely absurd experience. The performance combines operatic singing and spoken elements with Shrigley’s trademark surreal humour and Fennessy’s wickedly clever musical score, featuring an orchestra dressed in chef’s hats and a conductor wielding a whisk.
More than just a musical performance, Pass the Spoon is a wild operatic ride of imagination that pushes the boundaries of traditional opera. With a disturbingly ecclesiastical butcher, neurotic ingredients, and a meal preparation that becomes increasingly unhinged, the show promises an evening of unexpected laughs and musical brilliance that will leave audiences both bewildered and delighted.
