About the event

A night of intense improvised music from Swiss Duo Zimmerman/Lienhard and Leeds’ own Herbie Hopkins.

Zimmerman/Lienhard

Zimmermann / Lienhard is a duo with the unusual combination of the instruments accordion and oscillators. Since 2018 they have been performing together in different contexts. In 2021 they released their first album “kaputt” on the Swiss label Wide Ear Records, toured in Switzerland and Germany and played at the Météo Mulhouse Festival and Festival Archipel, among others. The performances of the duo Zimmermann / Lienhard can be stylistically classified somewhere between ambient, noise, drone and new music.

Deep droning sounds, standing tones, fine melody and virtuoso passages. The accordion and the oscillator are more similar than they seem. Although the sound production of their instruments is so different, Tizia Zimmermann and Pablo Lienhard try to dissolve the boundaries of acoustically and electronically produced sounds and approach each other improvisationally. Sometimes they merge into one, sometimes the duo lets their worlds collide.

Herbie Hopkins

Herbie Hopkins is a songwriter from Leeds.
His songs are often about anatomy, nocturnal landscapes, and supernatural self-discovery. He combine vivid lyrical imagery with spectral, finger-picked guitar parts. The musicians who accompany him are skilled improvisers and embellish his songs with free improvisation. Together, their music is sparklingly immediate and uniquely expressive.

His debut album ‘Kyra’ and the single ‘Night Sand’, were released with Lamplight Social Records.
